What Ohio requires of drivers under 21

Since September 30, 2025, every new driver under 21 in Ohio must complete driver’s education before taking the driving test, not just teens under 18.

  • 24hours of classroom training, completed online
  • 8hours of in-car training with Driveright
  • 50hours of driving with a parent, including 10 at night

Parents can log the 50 hours in the state’s RoadReady Ohio app, which produces the BMV affidavit when they’re done.

A note to parents

We take teaching your teen to drive seriously

Parents, at Driveright we understand your concerns. It’s important to do your research to find the best driving school for your teenager. Here are answers to the questions we hear most.

Who are the instructors?

Every Driveright instructor is trained to Driveright’s high standards and has a minimum of 15 years of driving experience. Each instructor has a thorough background check, including an FBI and driving record check.

Does my 18-, 19- or 20-year-old need driver’s ed?

Yes. Since September 30, 2025, Ohio requires every new driver under 21 to complete driver’s education before taking the driving test, not just teens under 18. Our under-21 program covers the 8 hours of behind-the-wheel training.

How many hours does my teen need?

Students are required to complete 24 hours of classroom training plus 8 hours of in-car training. This is in addition to the 50 hours they must drive with their parents, including 10 hours at night.

What will my teenager drive?

Driveright features a fleet of GM vehicles, including the Chevrolet Cruze, which instructors and students alike find comfortable to handle and learn maneuverability in. Your teen’s instructor will be instructing them in a clearly marked training vehicle.

Can my teen drive during the school day?

Yes. We offer daytime drives Monday through Friday during the school day. This is an excused absence from school under the Ohio bill signed in September 2025.

Can we register before the online class is finished?

Yes. You may register before completing the online classes to be placed on the roster. You must have the 24-hour completion certificate from your online provider to schedule the in-car sessions.

When will we receive the final certificate?

Your final certificate is issued by Driveright upon completion of the drives. Please allow up to 5 business days.
